Can I Vape at the Olympics? Olympic Vaping Rules Explained

image

Every sports fan’s favourite time of year has arrived. That’s right, the 2024 Olympic Games start this month.

This year, the games take place in the ‘city of love’ - Paris. Spread across multiple sporting venues, you may be wondering how you’ll fare with your vape pen in hand.

If you’re a vaper travelling to France, you may be wondering where you can vape so allow us to help as we cover the vaping rules of the 2024 Olympic games.

Where are the 2024 Olympic Games Held?

As we mentioned previously, Paris is the central location of this year’s Olympic games. The main events will all be held at the Stade de France, which includes: men’s and women’s sprinting, the 100m-400m long jump, and all seven rugby matches. In total, the Stade de France will see 43 out of 48 competitions, but there are some additional places, each with their own stadium rules and regulations, to bear in mind.

Can I Vape at the Paris Olympics?

For the most part, all indoor venues and establishments do not permit vaping as per French smoking laws. Some, however, will have designated smoking areas around or outside the venue to be used.

The official stance from the Olympics is that smoking is not permitted at any venues, applying to both cigarettes and vape devices.

Out of the 35 total French Olympic venues, 24 of which contain indoor elements and, therefore, rules on smoking/vaping. Some venues are temporary structures built purely for the games. In which case, you can assume that the smoking/vaping rules of the games themselves apply. This means, in short, no smoking or vaping in public spaces; only in dedicated smoking areas.

To save you some disappointment prior to your journey to this year’s games, we’ve researched and detailed all of the vaping rules that we could find for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

As always, though, we highly recommend you research each venue individually before attending.

Can I Vape at the Bercy Arena?

For the most part, the Bercy Arena (Accor Arena), is a non-smoking, non-vaping venue. There is, however, a dedicated smoking area. This area can be found at entrance C close to the gallery.

Can I Vape at the Aquatics Centre?

Given that the Aquatics Centre is the only permanent structure to be built purely for the Olympic games, it is to abide by the wider rules of the 2024 Olympics. Of which, state that smoking is not permitted at any Paris 2024 venues, apart from within designated areas.

As of yet, there is no public information as to where the smoking areas are in the Aquatics Centre.

Can I Vape at Bordeaux Stadium?

The Bordeaux Stadium has a generalised policy on smoking/vaping. In enclosed areas, smoking or vaping is not permitted.

There is no guidance around where smoking is permitted. So, we recommend checking in with a member of staff.

Can I Vape at Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium?

Although the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium is a little out of date compared to other football stadiums, it too follows the general guidance given by the French law on smoking/vaping. There is no smoking or vaping permitted in public areas – the only places this is allowed is on designated smoking areas.

These areas are difficult to find prior to attending. We therefore recommend having a look around when you get there or asking for a map of the stadium.

Can I Vape at the Grand Palais?

The Grand Palais is being reopened this year as a temporary Olympic venue. While the venue has its own website with guidance given to visitors, none of this guidance mentions smoking or vaping.

It is therefore safe to assume that such activity is not permitted within the venue itself. However, there may be smoking areas designated for attendees.

Can I Vape at La Beaujoire Stadium?

Unfortunately, La Beaujoire Stadium doesn’t display any guidance around the rules on smoking/vaping. Therefore, it’s safe to say that unless there are signposted places for such activity, it is not permitted within the venue.

Can I Vape at Lyon Stadium?

While the Lyon Stadium website doesn’t give any official word on its smoking rules, it's likely that smoking isn’t allowed in the stadium. Although there’s no mention of smoking areas to be used, these are fairly common practice in public buildings, so we’d advise you to keep your eyes peeled once there.

Can I Vape at Marseille Stadium?

Also known as the Orange Velodrome, Marseille Stadium is another Olympic venue with barely any public-facing rules on smoking or vaping. This is another one to add to proceed with caution and assume the usual vaping laws of France still apply.

Can I Vape at Nice Stadium?

Responsible for hosting at least six football matches in this year’s Olympics, the most recent guidance available around smoking at this stadium is found from a document released by the Rugby World Cup back in 2023. We highly doubt the rules outlined in here have changed since then, so they’re your best bet.

Unsurprisingly, smoking is not permitted in the stadium, which we imagine would also extend to vaping. The document does provide a map of the stadium, and we unfortunately cannot see smoking areas being labelled.

Can I Vape at the North Paris Arena?

This year, the Villepinte Exhibition Centre is being transformed into a sports facility to host boxing and modern pentathlon events. This is another case of no public word on smoking/vaping, but yet another document produced by the company responsible for maintaining the building does claim that it is a non-smoking venue. Again, there are no floor plans with a visible smoking area, but we imagine these will be accounted for in the transition period as the venue turns from exhibition centre to an arena.

Can I Vape at the Parc des Princes?

Home to Paris Saint-Germain F.C, the Parc de Princes is one of Paris’ oldest sporting venues, officially opening its doors in 1972. Smoking/vaping guidance for this venue comes courtesy of Newcastle United following their showdown against the team in November, 2023.

The guidance states that smoking is not permitted anywhere inside the stadium, but that supporters are able to do so on the ground level, outside the main entrance.

Can I Vape at Paris La Défense Arena?

Developed by the Rugby Union in 2017, the Paris La Défense Arena has played host to plenty of historic events. The venue does have a smoking/vaping area, which is located by the entrance hall, at Gate 33. Vaping is not permitted anywhere outside of this location, and doing so can result in expulsion.

Can I Vape at Pierre Mauroy Stadium?

Pierre Mauroy Stadium is another Olympic venue that doesn’t clearly broadcast its rules on smoking/vaping. As a result, we advise you to assume that it is not permitted in the main stands.

Can I Vape at Stade Roland-Garros?

The Stade Roland-Garros will host a mixture of boxing and ball games at this year’s Olympics. While it’s difficult to uncover official guidance on smoking at the venue, it's best to be cautious and assume it is not permitted unless otherwise stated at the venue.

Can I Vape at Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines BMX Stadium?

There are no specific smoking or vaping rules outlined for the Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines BMX Stadium. However, the venue itself does form a part of the overall Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines Velodrome complex. Interestingly, no public guidance is available for the rest of the complex either. But, in the interest of abiding by French laws, it is safe to assume that vaping is not permitted throughout the complex.

Can I Vape at Stade de France?

The Stade de France was opened in 1998 and is the stomping ground of the French national football and rugby teams. It’s steeped in history, and at the Olympics, will host a mixture of athletics and rugby. The venue has a list of prohibited items throughout the venue, of which includes cigarettes. Although vape devices aren’t listed, we’d imagine this prohibition also extends to them, therefore meaning that you can’t vape at the Stade de France.

Can I Vape at Yves-du-Manoir Stadium?

Unfortunately, the Yves-du-Manoir Stadium is yet another stadium with non-public facing guidance around smoking. Though, as is the case with other Olympic venues, it’s best to assume that it isn’t allowed.
