Does Vaping Break A Fast?

blu 2.0 ramadhan

Vaping may seem like it has been around forever, but in reality vaping only started to become popular in the mid-noughties. So, we completely understand why people are confused about how vaping interacts with fasting!

Can You Vape While Fasting?

It’s important to point out that there are different types of fasts – the main two are health/weight loss fasts and religious fasts such as Ramadan – and your answer will likely be different based on which fast you are doing. But don’t stress!

In this article, we’ll look at both types of fast to explore whether or not vaping is allowed.

What is a health or weight loss fast?

A health or weight loss fast is a period when you consume limited calories, avoid eating specific foods, or don’t eat or drink anything at all. Typically though, this doesn’t involve abstaining from water. The time period someone does this for may be longer or shorter depending on the individual and what they are trying to achieve.

People may fast for many reasons, including to manage blood sugar, to give the body time to rest from digestion and focus on other things, and to support weight loss. In a health fast, what is allowed and what is not allowed completely depends on the individual's goals and preferences.

Does vaping break a health fast?

While this depends on how you view vaping, the general consensus is that vaping does not break a health fast. This is because the number of calories that you get from vaping are negligible at most. What’s more, there are no sugars in most e-liquids. So, if your goal is to simply not consume any/many calories or sugars, you should be fine to vape while you fast – just make sure to double check the ingredients beforehand.

What is a Ramadan fast?

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is considered to be the holiest month of the year for Muslims. During Ramadan, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset each day, abstaining from all food and drink (including water), and things considered to be impure or sinful for the mind and body. This is so that they can fully focus on spiritual reflection and self-discipline.

The rules around what is allowed and what is not allowed during Ramadan are typically a lot stricter than those for a health or weight loss fast.

Ramadan starts in March and lasts until April, the exact dates being subject to new moon sightings. After this, the fast ends and the celebration of Eid al-Fitr begins!

Does vaping break a Ramadan fast?

When it comes to vaping and Ramadan fasting, the majority of people seem to think that vaping does break your fast. In addition to smoking, Muslims are also required to abstain from all other forms of tobacco and addictive substances while fasting for Ramadan. Since vaping does typically involve inhaling nicotine into the lungs, this is a violation of the fast.

You might be thinking: does nicotine-free e-liquid break a fast? Although the lines are more blurred here, most people would still say nicotine-free vaping does break a Ramadan fast, as it still involves inhaling chemicals into the body which could be seen as impure.

In conclusion, while vaping is not likely to break your health fast, it will break your Ramadan fast. Remember, it is important to carefully consider your goals and intentions when embarking on any type of fast, and to consult with a healthcare professional or religious authority if you have any questions.

To everyone partaking in Ramadan, Ramadan Mubarak!
